After School Sewing Clubs

The After School Sewing club is for a mixture of sewing abilities,

Taught by Jane Gordon – Advanced DBS checked tutor with experience of teaching young people how to sew for more than 10 years.

Depending on your sewing experience, projects will be chosen to develop new skills.  We make items such as pencil cases, bags, cushion covers and simple dressmaking projects to learn different techniques such as zips, button holes, bias binding, Neat and tidy hems and seams, and how to follow sewing patterns.

Mondays 4 – 5.30 – Complete beginners

This course runs twice through the year.  September – December and then January – March

Suitable for age 8+ who have never sewn before or have tried little bits of sewing with a family member or friend and want to become more confident to sew on their own.

This smaller sized class introduces using the sewing machine to complete beginners.  We show you how to thread your machine correctly, change the feet and use different stitches etc.  We also show you what to do when the machine is not stitching correctly.

During the full term (12 sessions) we will make some simple projects using the sewing machine to get used to new techniques such as seams and top stitching.  Sewing around curves and how to handle the fabric.  We’ll also make something using a zip.  Projects usually include bags, pencil cases, headbands and scrunchies

After completing this course you will be able to join some of the other classes.

Tuesdays 4 – 5.30pm – Intermediates/confident

Suitable for age 11+ with some experience of sewing projects using a sewing machine

We tend to work on different projects in this group, chosen by individuals

Wednesdays 4 – 5.30 – Confident beginners-intermediate

Suitable for age 8 plus.

This session is for anyone who is confident using the sewing machine and has had some experience of sewing projects using the sewing machine.

We tend to work together on one sewing project during these sessions.  Projects usually vary from bags and accessories to clothes.

Thursdays 4.30 – 6pm – Confident

Suitable for age 12+ or anyone who has been to sewing clubs for some time to build confidence.

This is a good session for anyone taking GCSE or A-Level textiles at school

In these sessions, each student works on their own project with help where needed.  They should feel confident enough to work independently for some of the session.

There will be a maximum of 8 students in each session, and up to 6 in the complete beginners class to allow for each student to have plenty of attention and support from the tutor

Sessions run as a block of usually 6 weeks (sometimes 5) depending on the term length and are to be booked and paid for in advance to secure a place.
